CTL Chromebook J2

Chromebooks have had a lot of success among budget minded buyers, but the best strides made by the Google Chrome OS powered laptops have been in the classroom, with entire schools converting to education concern systems for students from elementary to high school. The CTL Chromebook J2 ($199 as tested) is another such system, and the manufacturer has done a lot in this space, as seen with last year's CTL Educational Chromebook (NL6). The Chromebook J2 boasts a new processor, all day battery life, and looks that might turn heads, even among adults. It stands tall enough against low price competitors like the HP Chromebook 11 (Verizon LTE) and the Editors' Choice Asus Chromebook Flip (C100PA-DB02), which earns its top status thanks to famous performance and a more compelling design. Educators may want to take special notice, however; the Chromebook J2 sells at an even more affordable $169 for educational institutions.

Design

The laptop measures 0.76 by 11.42 by 8 inches (HWD) and weighs 2.46 pounds, which isn't far off from the size of the Acer Chromebook C720P-2600. The Chromebook J2 has a surprisingly sophisticated look for an education concern model. Where past systems looked plastic like, with the rounded corners of the CTL Educational Chromebook (NL6) and chunky rubber bumpers, like on the Dell Chromebook 11 Touch, the Chromebook J2 has a thin build, an aluminum covered palm rest, and a black on black color scheme that is accented with bare metal around the touchpad. If past education oriented chromebooks look like elementary school toys, the J2 looks like it just got its MBA.

The keyboard has the standard Chrome OS layout, with a dedicated search button and Chrome specific function keys instead of the usual F1 to F12 buttons. The touchpad has a matte plastic surface, with clickable corners instead of physical buttons. The touchpad supports Chrome gesture controls, like two finger tapping and scrolling.

The 11.6 inch display is small, but not unusual for a chromebook, average screen dimension is between 10 and 12 inches, and the 1,366 by 768 resolution is just as common. But while the resolution is standard, the limited viewing angles are not, with a lot of color shifting when viewed from any angle outside of dead center. It's applicable for one person, but not well suited to sharing the view with another classmate. Like most chromebooks, there is no touch functionality.

Features

On the right side of the system, you will find a single USB 2.0 port, a microSD card slot, and a headset jack. On the left are the Power connector for charging the laptop, a second USB 2.0 port, and an HDMI out port.
